Say NO to 'Government by Injunction'

Help Protect the Skeena Watershed!

September, 2007 - BC continues its long tradition of 'government by injunction' as another group of protesters (this time trying to protect the headwaters of three of BC's great salmon rivers from environmental damage resulting from coalbed methane extraction) face possible arrest under injunction as early as September, 2007.
(details @ www.skeenawatershed.com.)

Under court orders, any protester arrested is dealt with outside of the Criminal Code (as was the case at Eagleridge) where they will not be able to defend their actions in court nor have access to the basic rights all Canadians are afforded under Canada's statutory laws.

This process will not change without people demanding that it change. Demand that it changes TODAY!

ACT NOW! Click here to read the Coalitions' letter highlighting our concerns over the continued use of civil injunctions against protesters in BC (Eagleridge Bluffs, May 2006). Then send a copy of the letter with your comments to the BC Justice Review Task Force (cc: Attorney General Wally Oppal and Premier Campbell).

It is time to say "NO" to BC Courts ...
And "NO" to the continued use of civil injunctions.

Stand Up For Harriet Nahanee!

January, 2007 - People across the province were shocked by the 14 day jail sentence handed down to 71 year old native Elder Harriet Nahanee ifor peacefully protesting while inside an injunction zone at Eagleridge Bluffs. Harriet served 9 days in prison at a maximum security pre-trial facility. She had filed an appeal, but became gravely ill and died shortly after being released from prison.

A
petition that raises specific concerns surrounding Harriet Nahanee’s sentencing is in circulation. It demands that our elected officials call an immediate public inquiry into the handling of this case. The petition is now available online.

Please honour a very courageous native elder by reading the petition, signing it and passing the link on to others on your contact lists. The Supreme Court of BC must be held accountable for their actions in this case. It is the duty of our elected officials to ensure that a full and public inquiry is held.

What the Coalition has Been Doing:

Investigating Public Private Partnerships

The S2S highway is funded, in part, by a Public Private Partnership (P3) agreement. Coalition members investigating the details of this agreement have uncovered some disturbing information. Under the financial arrangement of this agreement, BC taxpayers might be overcharged to the tune of as much as $500 million. In addition, the maintenance contract appears to cost 300% more than conventional agreements for similar services. Efforts continue to establish reliable facts.

Environmental Monitoring:

Since the start of construction, Coalition members have been monitoring impacts to the environment. They have already reported incidence of blowdown. Efforts are also being made to ensure Kiewit practices due diligence in mitigating plant and animal loss, ie: relocation of species and placement of protective fencing around sensitive areas. Documentation and photographic evidence will continue throughout the duration of construction.

Have Concerns About Construction?
