2011 Seawall 100

Starter Photo - 22 October 2011

About 10 runners set out just after 8:00 am this morning to tackle the Seawall 100. Three of them are hoping to complete the full 100 Mile distance, another 3 were aiming to finish 50 Miles and the rest had signed up for various custom distances.

The morning dawned gray and very wet.  Old Action Jackson made a last minute call and opted to stay home and dry.  The brave hearts that did show, were surprised to see blue sky in the west as they approached Ambleside Beach after about 20min running.  Sure enough the weather dried out - at least for me (Sibylle) to finish my 10km custom course with the sun smiling down at me.

Karl will post results and a report below after everybody has finished tomorrow.  In the meantime, please feel free to add your comments below.

Event Report:  There's not very much to add to what others have already posted.  After completing 50 miles Norma decided to go home and spend some quality time with her mother who is visiting from Mexico.  Stephen sucumbed to uncontrollable shivering due to the cold and wisely decided to call it a day after 110K.  A good effort by both.
Craig continued on alone and finished the full 100 miles in 23:09, setting a new course record.  Congratulations Craig!  It's tough being out there alone in the night.

2010 Seawall 100 - Results

23 October 2010 - Rachel, Sibylle and Reagan ready to start.

Event Report:  It was a very small field that started the Seawall 100 this year.  The usual suspects were notably absent.  One was busy taking care of a new baby, two are out with injuries, another claims he was too busy earning a living and the last left the province to avoid having to do the run.  Can't understand why, it's such a pretty course.  It was a great day for running and the forecast rain held off until the very end.

Congratulations to Rachel for putting on such a great performance.  She set out to run further than 82 K and longer than 12 hours.  She ran strong all day.  If there were bonus points awarded for cheerfullness she would get lots.  It's nice to see someone enjoying a long run.  Special thanks to those who came out to support her.

You can read a complete report of Rachel's adventure on her blog.

2009 Seawall 100 - Results

24 October 2008 - 8 morning starters

Event Report (written by Gilles Barbeau)

Just a quick break from our busy life selling our condo and moving to a new apartment to acknowledge the performance of Karl Jensen, who is our first and only finisher of the two year running of the Seawall 100 in a very respectable time of 23:17. Karl told me that his newfound love for pavement is second to his sweetie. He also mentioned that the support of John and Wendy were instrumental in completing his 10th, yes that’s 10th 100 miler of the year. There were also some notable performances for the 50 miles distance by Tim and Lori. I don’t know why they have to run so fast though.

It was a beautiful fall day in Vancouver, the kind of day that you just want to hit the road and put the pedal to the metal…and get a speeding ticket. But that was nothing compared to the frustration of not being able to run, thanks to H1N1. Lucinda and I organized that run so that I could do a 100 miler among the so pleasant territory of my daily runs but ironically I haven’t able to run any of it so far.  I would to apologize on behalf of myself and Lucinda for the late report and posting of times. It’s been a crazy time for us lately but I sure plan to show up on the starting line next year healthier and more affluent, you know with the sale of the condo and all.

2008 Seawall 100 - Results

25 October 2008 - 10 starters

Event Report by Gilles Barbeau:

It was a beautiful fall day for the first run of the Seawall 100. Ten runners were at the starting line with 3 of them having expressed with more or less conviction that they were going for the full 100 mile distance.

Despite a solid performance for the 50 mile distance by Tim Wiens in just under 8 hours, the 100 mile distance remains unconquered. Not even our legendary 100 miler, Mr. Karl Jensen was able to master the course. He said he would be back next year for his revenge. At this point of the conversation I would like to re-introduce you with the following comment about the course:

“The Seawall 100 is probably the easiest 100 miler around but don't fool yourself it will test the best of any long distance runner. A veteran Ultra-Runner will tell you that so much pavement and flat running will tax your body parts in ways that you did not imagine existed. “

And I can assure you that Karl can testifies to that. I drove John and Daniel at around 10 pm to meet with him in Kits and to spend the night  running with him. Despite such lovely offer of companionship Karl figured that the pavement had got the better of him and that there was not enough glory in this thing to go on. So the decision was made to pack it up and head home to share a warm bed with his sweetie. Of course Daniel and John were deeply disappointed but managed to hold it. Such is the world of ultra-running. It's not suppose to be easy, that's why my mamma doesn't run ultras.
Well, that’s it folks. I’m sure counting on being there next year and beat this thing.
