North Shore Enduro 2008 - Results

Karl Running in the 2006 EnduroReport: The Sixth running of the North Shore 6- Hour Enduro was a success. We were very lucky with the weather as the anticipated rain held off. However it was cold for those in the gazebo (Wade and Danielle). In all 18 people ran at least 1 lap of the course. Once again Randy Hunter's record of 8 laps in 5:39 is safe, and possibly untouchable. Mark Lesack picked up his second victory at the Enduro by running 7 laps in 5:22. Good to see some new faces, hope you enjoyed the event. Special thanks to Kintec for their support. Danille from Kintec came out to aid the runners and keep a frozen Wade (time keeper) company.
Around ten of us showed up at the pub, everyone received a prize (Thanks to our sponsors Kintech and Trailrunner Magazine!). Now the bad news. My camera did not work. I'm disappointed because I have a group photo from each year.

Photos: To Andy's dismay, his camera was not cooperating. If you have any images of the day, please upload to Flickr.com, add to the CFA Flickr group and tag with Enduro2008 NorthShoreEnduro2008 NorthShoreEnduro and ClubFatAssEvents.

We always strive to make things better at Club Fat Ass. To help us, please take a few moments to fill out this short Post Event Survey.

2007 - Year 5

12 May 2007 - 24 Starters

Sunny skies and ideal trail conditions greated runners at this years 6-Hour Enduro. The 4th edition of the Enduro attracted 24 runners eager to start their 6 hour jaunt through the Lynn Loop. This 7.6km loop is a good mix of easy foot paths and rocky rooty trail. Randy Hunter's 2005 record of 8 laps in 5:39 looked to be in danger when Dom Repta and Matt Sessions put their game face on. However, once they saw a group of retired runners on the lawn enjoying the days sun, they decided 7 laps was plenty. Six other runners knocked off 6 laps including Jackson who chalked up his 87th ultra. Whether you ran 1 lap or 7, it was great to see a large group of runners come out and enjoy some exercise on a perfect day.

A special thanks to Al Harman for helping me with the timing. Because of Al I was able to slip in a few laps myself. A big thank you also to the sponsors of this event.   Be reminded that CFA members receive great discounts when shopping at NSA.  Please support them and show them your appreciation.

Until next year...

We always strive to make things better at Club Fat Ass.  To help us, please take a few moments to fill out this short survey about the Enduro

2006 - Year 4

North Shore Enduro 2006 - Starter Photo
North Shore Enduro 2006 - Starter Photo (click on the photos to see a slide show of all Enduro photos)

The 4th annual North Shore 6-hour Enduro was run under perfect conditions. The sun was shining, the temps were cool and 31 participants eagerly toed the line to start a day's work on the trails. Randy Hunter's 8-lap record is safe for now, but Mark Lesack and Bill Dagg grinded out 7.

Two relay teams, the Bonkey Dollocks and Team Jones participated. The 3 runners who made up the Bonkey's, Carl, Carl Jr., and Brooke, are new to Club Fat Ass, and look forward to running more;Club events. Team Jones took turns running 2 laps each while their kids ran laps around the tent their parents set up for them. Unfortunately for Team Jones, the kids never napped!

I would like to thank all the runners for coming out. This year's event was the biggest Enduro yet. I look forward to seeing you all next year on Saturday May 12, 9am sharp!

2005 - Year 3

No One Can Hunt Down Hunter!

Randy Hunter of North Vancouver set an incredible pace from start to finish to win the 2005 North Shore 6-Hour Enduro, an annual Club Fat Ass event. Randy seemed to gain strength and momentum with each lap of the challenging 7km loop. Finishing 8 laps (56 km) with a total time of 5:39, Randy’s nearest competitors were only able to rack up 6 laps before calling it a day by the 3 pm cutoff.

The course at Seymour Demonstration Forest contained gentle flat sections, a bit of single-track with numerous twists and turns, and a demanding technical part that included exposed roots and rocks. Mere weeks before the event, the Enduro was forced to move venues due to a mountain bike event happening the same weekend. Dom Repta, Ean Jackson and Event Host, Andy Nicol, were able to come up with a new loop course that was a bit longer and more challenging.

Race day saw 16 solo runners and two relay teams come out to try the new course. Runners ran under nearly perfect conditions as the expected rain never materialized. The idea behind Enduro is to run as many laps as possible in a 6-hour period. Relay teams can alternate laps or run together with total laps being calculated. Everyone seemed to have a good time with only a few twisted ankles reported.

The post-event party was held at the Seymour Pub where runners enjoyed good food and drink and door prizes were drawn. Special thanks to Kate from KPL Enterprises for setting up a table at the start/finish area for runners to sample energy bars and fitness drinks. Next year the Enduro returns to it’s traditional venue at Camp Brick, located down the road from the Seymour Demonstration Forest park gates, and the original 3.25km loop.

History

The North Shore Enduro was introduced by Richard Juryn and Jonathan Wornell of Shore Events in 2003. Richard and Jonathan's idea was to host a weekend of outdoor fun close to downtown Vancouver in early June. Saturday would be a 6-hour mountain bike race and Saturday a 6-hour running race with a big, outdoor party on Saturday night to celebrate the mountain biking accomplishments, to inspire the runners and to motivate the ambitious men and women of iron who dared to attempt both disciplines. Riders and bikers who weren't quite ready for 6 hours of non-stop adrenaline were encouraged to team up. Family and friends were invited to take advantage of the party atmosphere and to cheer on their athletes. By combining a safe, convenient endurance challenge that appealed as much to beginners as elite athletes with a low-key atmosphere, the event proved very popular with participants.

Circumstances didn't allow Richard and Jonathan to put the event on in 2004. When one of Canada's top ultramarathon runners, Andy Nicol, learned of this, he stepped forward and offered to save the event. Under Andy's leadership, the the event was refined to one day with a focus on runners, their friends and their families. The event was again endorsed as a great success by all participants. Since 2004, Andy has hosted the North Shore Enduro as a free, environmentally friendly, low-key Club Fat Ass event.

The Teams

Recognizing that few athletes can run for 6-hours without stopping, the North Shore Enduro encourages team participation. Teams can be made up of 2 to 6 runners. Each team has a name and each team determines its own strategy for maximizing the distance it can cover during the 6 hours. The Enduro offers less experienced runners the perfect opportunity to get a taste of what trail running has to offer.

The Route

Comments on the route include, "An outstanding choice of trails for the beginning trail runner," "Awesome cross section of North Shore trails!", "Quiet. No traffic. The smell of pine forest and perfume of wild flowers was everywhere on the trail as I ran."

The event is held on mix of single track and wide trails in Lynn Valley... an oasis of nature in a city of almost 2 million inhabitants.

In keeping with Club Fat Ass guidelines, the route is not indicated with surveyor tape, chalk or other markings that might harm the environment. Each participant (or "Guest" as club members who participate are called) downloads detailed route instructions from this website and uses them to navigate the trails. All runners are encouraged to train year-round on the Enduro route.

Past Results

In its short 2 year history, the solo event has attracted the elite of Canada's ultramarthoners including many current and past national 100K run team and 100-mile runners. Jim Swadling (20 laps) and Wendy Montgomery (18 laps) are the current solo course record holders. The 2-person team of Gary Robbins and Mark Fearman hold the team record of 21 laps. See detailed results.

FAQ

Event Home | Registration | Agenda | Course | Results
Background | Thanks! | FAQ | Contact

Q: I don't want to run, but I'd like to help. What might I do?
A: You're a hero! If you can make the time, we can find you something to do as part of the event crew. Some thoughts at crew tasks.

Q: If I decide to run, what should I bring?
A: Whatever you'd normally wear for a run of the distance you select to run given the conditions of the day. Don't forget to read and print out the information in the Agenda.

Q: Are there aid stations?
A: We recommend you come prepared to run without external aid. There may be some aid, but only if your family and friends step forward and offer to organize a central aid station. (See aid.)

Q: What can I win?
A: Nothin. The solo man and woman and the team to finish the most laps get bragging rights. All participants and times go up on the Results page for posterity sake.

Q: I've never done a trail run before. Is this a good place to start?
A: Yes. As far as north shore trails go, this route is tame and safe.

Q: How tough is the course?
A: Tough question to answer! How well are you trained? You doing the whole 6-hour enchilada or running as part of a team? Why not see for yourself and run the course one day between now and the event?

Q: Do I really need to print off the course instructions and bring them with me?
A: We recommend you do. The circuit is fairly straightforward, but it is not marked with surveyor tape or chalk or anything else that might potentially leave a trace of the event.

Q: This event is free, but for Club Fat Ass members only. How do I get into the club?
A: There is no hazing ceremony like the Hash House Harriers! Runners, walkers, hikers, triathletes, adventure racers, mountain bikers and anyone else interested in having fun in the great outdoors is welcome and can register online for a nominal fee.

Q: Can I wait until the last minute and join at the start?
A: Yes, but we prefer you don't. Last minute registration makes it very difficult to organize and coordinate the event. Besides, we only take day-of-event registrants on run day which means you'll have to spend another $35 if you want the cool Club Fat Ass t-shirt and free access to other events later in the year.

Q: It's a free world. What's to stop me from just running the course.
A: Nothing...in fact, we encourage you to run the course often in training! We prefer that you do not 'bandit' the course on event day, however. If you insist, please don't take any of the aid intended for members. You will not get recognition in the results or be eligible for any draw prizes and you'll have to wear a black patch over one eye at post event get together. Furthermore, you won't be allowed into future events until you come clean with past membership dues.

Q: What if I get lost?
A: You shouldn't get lost, but if you do, you're not far from civilization.

Q: Do I get credit for any time I spend off-course?
A: Are you kidding? If you do find an obvious mistake in the course directions, point it out to Andy at the party for a free beer!

Q: Couldn't you mark the course like just about every other running race I've ever been in? It's a pain to pause and read instructions.
A: It's a requirement of Club Fat Ass that events be low impact and environmentally friendly. We don't want to put chalk/flour on the ground, hang surveyor tape in the trees, paint rocks, put up signs or glow sticks or do anything that might leave a trace of the race. Besides, having to pause and read the directions may slow down the faster runners.

Q: What is the 'Rule of the Trail'?
A: If you pack it in, you can pack it out. (That means don't you dare litter!) Leave nothing but your footprints on the trail. We strongly encourage you to pick up any trash you find along the trail and to present it to Andy at the potluck. There may be a recognition award for the person who packs out more than they packed in.

Q: What if I have to heed the call of nature.
A: There are washrooms at the start/finish.

Q: I am supposed to be self-sufficient because there is no aid provided. Can I get a friend to come out and give me food and drink along the route?
A: Absolutely! In fact, it would be nice if your friend were to help everyone. Please have your friends and family members contact us and we will do all we can to insure that they have fun, as well.

Q: Can I bring my friends and family to the post event party even if they didn't run or volunteer? Do they have to be Club Fat Ass members?
A: Friends and family are absolutely welcome and no, they do not have to be Club Fat Ass members. Please be sure to specify how many guests you will bring with you on your registration form and please ask them to be self-sufficient.

Q: Are there any trophies, prizes or other hardware or freebies?
A: If you assume there's no aid, no course marking, no t-shirt, no enthusiastic spectators and no prizes or freebies of any sort, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Q: When will the 'official' results be available?
A: We hope to have the results up on this website within 24 hours of the finisher party. We will also distribute the results to major local and national ultrarunning communities.

The circuit is straightforward, but you will find this trail description to be helpful for the first couple of laps... especially the more technical first half. Be sure to download the formatted version of this course description from the table below and bring it (and a plastic baggie to protect it) with you on the day of the run. Better yet, train on the course and bring the directions!
